Felt rug pads come in a range of thickness. A variety of factors determine the ideal thickness of a felt rug pad. Some of the factors depend upon personal choice of the individual, while some other factors belong to the type of floor you want the rug on. The important factors that help decide upon the thickness of the felt rug pad are described as follows:
1) The type of floor is a very important factor that affects the ideal thickness of the felt rug pads. The ideal thickness of the felt rug pads will differ according to the floor. The hard surfaced floor e.g. hard wood floor will require a thicker rug pad as compared to the soft wood floor. The ideal thickness for the hardwood floor should be .30” and 3/8”. This will make the felt rug pads perfect for use. While, for the softwood floor, the thickness of the felt rug pad should be less than 3/8” and 30.
2) The furniture that has to be placed over the rug also determines the ideal thickness of the felt rug pad. If heavy furniture is being placed on the rug, then the rug pad should be thick enough in order to sustain the weight of the furniture. If the thickness level of the felt rug pad is appropriate according to the furniture, then it will minimize the wear and tear of the rug on which the furniture has been placed. While, if no furniture on the rug has been placed, then the thickness of the pad can be reduced accordingly.
3) The ideal level of thickness of the felt rug pads depend on the climate as well. Because the floor tends to be colder in the winter the thickness of the pad will be varied accordingly. Similarly in the summer when the demand of keeping a room warm is reduced, the thickness of the pad installed will be reduced accordingly.
4) The thickness of the felt rug pad is also a matter of personal choice. Some people may prefer thicker felt rug pads, because they mostly like to work on the floor, therefore, they will need a high level of comfort and the thickness of the rug pad will be more. While, on the other hand, there are certain people who use rug pads only for protection purposes and they may not prefer to use a very thick felt rug pad because they hardly ever use the rug for sitting on floor.
The thickness of the felt rug pad is a personal as well as the situational choice. There could not be a clear-cut thickness level as it depends on a range of factors.
